No to higher gas taxes
As gas prices continue to soar under Biden, Citrus County won't be trying to add to the pain at the pump by raising local gas taxes.
At a Nov. 9 workshop to discuss funding road repairs, the Citrus County Commission declined to pursue the idea of placing a referendum on the ballot asking county voters to approve an extra 1 cent sales surtax per gallon, although liberal Commissioner Holly Davis said she supported the idea.
According to a staff memo, the county needs about $10 million per year for all local roads to be paved on a 20- to 25-year cycle, but it currently only collects and spends about $3 million a year in existing gas taxes.
Rather than raising taxes, the county could consider not approving any more capital projects that increase the county's debt. If annual debt service weren't such a big part of the budget, the county might have enough money to repair the roads that most need repaving.
