Residents can speak out against proposed Turnpike extension through Citrus County

By John Labriola -

As if the coming Suncoast Parkway weren't enough, the Florida Department of Transportation is planning an extension of the Florida Turnpike that could have it running through Citrus County under certain scenarios.

Two of the four alternative alignments currently being considered for the proposed Northern Turnpike Extension would take it through Citrus County  bringing traffic congestion, urban sprawl, and the inevitable political-demographic transformation that goes along with that.

Citrus County residents will have an opportunity to voice their opposition to the project at an FDOT public meeting on Thursday, Dec. 9 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the College of Central Florida, 3800 S. Lecanto Highway, Lecanto, FL 34461. Residents who aren't available that day can attend a virtual meeting to be held on Dec. 7. To register for either meeting, go to www.floridasturnpike.com/NTE.

Voters will have another chance to sound off about the proposed Turnpike extension and any other state issues on their minds at Citrus County's annual state legislative delegation meeting this Friday, Dec. 10 from 1 to 4 p.m. in the County Commission Chamber, Citrus County Courthouse, 110 N. Apopka Ave., Inverness, FL 34450.
