Letter to the Editor: Thoughts on Jan. 6
I was a young officer in a unit of the New York Army National Guard. The unit was in Brooklyn, N.Y. First we trained and then, when needed, we assisted the NYPD and other police units in dealing with the unrest in Brooklyn which quickly turned into rioting. The riots were quick to spot. They consisted of, other than peaceful chanting and singing, yelling and screaming, glass breaking, looters running away with stolen merchandise, sometimes shots being fired on both sides, occasionally people in the way, fires and mayhem. Not unlike the 574 violent protests across the country, lasting about 1,000 days/nights, during 2020, that preceded Jan. 6th, 2021 at the Capitol. These disturbances were barely covered by the mainstream media and were always referred to as peaceful protests.
Lo and behold, Jan. 6 arrives and it is being referred to as an Insurrection by the Democratic Party and the mainstream press. Funny thing, from all the video and audio I saw/heard, about 99% of the protesters were peaceful and marching around the streets and buildings. Only about 1% entered the Capitol. Video shows Capitol Police waiving them in, a few lining, NOT blocking access to hallways and other strange happenings. Only ONE person died as a direct result of the incident. That was Ashli Babbitt!!! An UNARMED Trump supporter, without any warning or challenge and shot by a Capitol Police Officer. WHY????? Meanwhile, about 750 people were arrested for various reasons, mostly misdemeanors and low-grade felonies; none were held for Insurrection or Sedition. They were held without bail, in solitary confinement, denied visitation, medical attention, religious rights, etc., even though they have no prior arrests, and most are still in jail under the same conditions.
There were people identified as protesters and targeted for arrest but then removed from the lists??? WHY????? This was not an assault on the Capitol of our Republic by its citizens but rather an assault by the Democratic Party on the Republic's Rule of Law.
