Do Citrus County conservatives have an apathy problem?

(Legislative delegation hears from citizens.)
By John Labriola -

Citrus County voters rejected the Biden/Harris ticket by a greater than 2-to-1 margin last November, but you wouldn't know it from attending last week's annual state legislative delegation meeting in the Citrus County Courthouse.

Florida Senate President Wilton Simpson and State Rep. Ralph Massullo listened for two hours as local elected officials, activists and citizens shared their concerns and desires for state legislative action on a variety of issues.

Among the speakers were two representatives of the Democratic Women's Club of Citrus County who spoke in favor of abortion on demand and free tampons in the schools, two retired teachers who defended anti-white Critical Race Theory (CRT) and demanded restrictions on gun rights, and a local representative of the leftist League of Women Voters who spoke out against Gov. Ron DeSantis' efforts to weed out voter fraud.

Nobody rose to defend the right to life, oppose CRT, advocate for the Second Amendment or support election integrity reforms in the wake of the disastrous 2020 elections. And as the Florida Department of Transportation considers extending the Florida Turnpike through Citrus County, the only two people who rose to speak out against those plans were both from outside the county.

That kind of apathy could explain why Citrus County is now the most likely path for the proposed northern Turnpike extension, given the organized opposition that two alternative alignments through Marion and Levy counties face from residents of those two counties. That same apathy on the part of local conservatives also could explain why liberals dominate Citrus County's advisory boards despite representing such a small minority of the population, and why certain county commissioners just don't seem to care what conservative residents think.

If you want to help break this cycle of apathy, email us at citruseagle@outlook.com and let us know how you'd like to get involved so we don't keep getting rolled by the politicians.

  1. That is bothersome. Except the part about the free tampons in schools. If a girl needs a tampon, give her a dang tampon, for crying out loud.
