The County Commission must do its job

Citrus County Library Director Eric Head doubled down on his support for LGBT propaganda displays in the county libraries at last week's Library Advisory Board meeting.

After several concerned residents showed up at the Dec. 9 meeting to demand answers following months of mixed messages and a lack of transparency, Library Board Chairwoman April McLaughlin read a pre-approved statement indicating that nothing would change, despite months of complaints from dozens of parents and citizens.

That means that unless the County Commission acts, the county's libraries will once again be turned into taxpayer-funded LGBT propaganda centers during the entire month of June in observation of "Gay Pride Month" by featuring child-endangering ideological displays complete with rainbow flags and slogans celebrating homosexuality and gender dysphoria.

This may come as a surprise to anyone who attended the Nov. 9 county commission meeting, including members of the county commission themselves. Toward the end of the public comment portion of that meeting, a resident announced that she had met privately with Eric Head and worked out a deal with him that supposedly addressed parents' concerns regarding the displays.

But after last week's library board meeting adjourned, Head confirmed to this reporter that the libraries will be doing "nothing different" next year than what they did this year.

When asked how his position squares with what commissioners said at the July 13 county commission meeting, when they publicly advised staff that they wanted no more ideological displays in the libraries (see video), Head dismissed their remarks as merely "a conversation they had from the dais."

In other words Eric Head, an unelected bureaucrat, has decided to ignore the stated will of the commission because their wishes were not placed on the agenda in the form of a directive and approved by an official roll call vote.

So the ball is now back in the County Commission's court, and it's up to our elected commissioners to match their words with deeds and protect the taxpayers from being forced to subsidize Eric Head's personal political agenda.

If you want to let commissioners know how you feel about this and their need to act, you can find their emails on the commissioners' webpage

  1. I guess it's time to replace our Commissioner's with more reliable officials who work for the citizens of Citrus County. Time to weed out the garden.

  2. This is where all ages go to enjoy books, some stay and read, some take them home. It is time to look after our children and grandchildren, so I will not be using the Library if they continue to
put these displays out. This is just the start, if we allow this, our children will get nothing out of this except confusion.
